BG Soccer: Third Time’s the Charm…

By Lisa Smith
Or so it seemed for the bantam girls soccer team yesterday. It has been several years since we’ve fielded a true Bantam squad, so it’s exciting to see such a talented and enthusiastic group take the pitch this season.

Game 1 – September 17 @ Galt The girls kicked off their season with a hard-fought match against Galt, creating multiple scoring chances on both ends. Galt led 2–0 at halftime, and a quick goal early in the second half could have sealed the game—but not for this team. The girls rallied, showing grit and determination. A beautiful cross from Riley found the back of the net and momentum shifted. Ten minutes later, Florence rifled a shot past the keeper, bringing us within one. The final ten minutes were intense, but we ultimately fell 3–2. Still, it was an impressive debut for a young and very small squad. With only 13 players, substitutions had to be strategic in the heat, and stellar goalkeeping by Heidi kept us competitive throughout.

Game 2 – September 27 vs Richmond Ten days later, we faced a big, strong and skilled Richmond team. Down to 12 players due to a concussion, the girls showed heart and resilience. Heidi was again phenomenal in net, making 38 saves on 42 shots—yes, 38! Despite the 4–0 loss, the team improved steadily and moved the ball more and more effectively as the game progressed.

Game 3 – September 30 @ MVR Just three days later, we hit the road again—this time with only 11 players due to a second concussion; this meant no subs. We adjusted our formation and gave it everything. Down 1–0 at halftime, we made a bold move — pulling our goalie and placing her at centre mid. A handball in the box led to a penalty, and Heidi, the goalie stepped up and roofed it! Suddenly, we were back in the game. Fired up, the girls pressed hard, and Florence netted her second goal of the season. We dominated much of the second half, but a late handball against us led to another penalty kick… this time against us. Have no fear… our backup keeper Charlotte held her ground—and the shot sailed over the net! Nonetheless, Charlotte made several key saves and discovered she had a booming kick that cleared the ball with ease.

Final Score: 2–1 Spartans. Well done, team! One of the best moments? Hearing spectators shout, “Don’t let #7 touch the ball!” For context, #7 is our right-wing Annabel—all 4’8” (she says taller, but I beg to differ!) and 80 lbs of her (soaking wet!)—but she’s lightning fast and handles the ball with skill and agility. Her twin Lucy plays left wing and is equally speedy and sharp, so it’s likely the crowd was also referring to #3 during the first half!

Huge congratulations to the entire team for playing a full match with no subs. Standout performances at midfield by Olivia, and on defense and at striker by Tehya, Nanuin and Flo helped seal the upset.
Let’s go Spartans—the season is just getting started!
