SG Soccer: And Lessons Learned

By Erik Van Dyke
Two days earlier, your Spartans had suffered their first ETIAC loss of the season at Galt, a critical defeat that compressed the league standings. This made this home tilt vs BCS critical – we have zero room for error now if we want to capture the league banner.

Just as importantly, did we learn from that loss to the Pipers? Would we take BCS too lightly just because we beat them 3-1 at the SIT? Would we start slow, with less than 100% intensity in the first half? Would we allow ourselves to get outworked by an underdog team?

The answer to all three of those questions is NOT A CHANCE, because the Red & White steamrolled their Lennoxville rivals 8-2 in an offensive display the likes of which I haven’t seen since 2022. Even better than all the goals, we approached the game with “appropriate fear,” we came out of the gate with 100% intensity, and we worked our tails off for the full 80 minutes.

Highlights? You say you want some highlights?! 😊
  • Lexi crossing it to Hailey, who takes a touch before volleying it exquisitely over the keeper for the opening goal 4 minutes in
  • Our goalkick coverage being so good – “EIGHT!” – that we keep BCS pinned in their defensive zone for the first 19(!) minutes of the game
  • Olivia playing her best game of the year (fresh off another good game vs Galt)
  • the Blooper Of The Year so far, with Rafaelle passing the ball directly out of bounds on our own corner kick. (That said, I’m pretty sure she made up for it with the 4 goals she scored on the day!)
  • Etsuho one-touch-volleying a long cross from Lexi and barely missing top corner
  • Sara C to Raf to Eve who puts her defender in a blender with her dirty little feet before clinically finishing bottom corner
  • Player Of The Game Lexi (who was also Student Of The Week!) darting in from the right wing, gaining the corner of the 6-yard box, and hammering a missile short side under the crossbar… greasy… so greasy…
  • and, of course, the Highlight Of The Game, Sara M scoring “the first goal of my life!” on a corner kick scramble and smiling like an 8-year old at Christmas for the next 10 minutes
Look. It’s fun when the ball goes in, and REALLY fun when it goes in 8 times. But I want the players to remember what really matters here, i.e. the lessons we learned from the Galt game. We were true athletes out there, intense and focused right from the opening whistle, sending a message to our opponents that Stanstead was here to play.
Well done, ladies. Whose house? OUR HOUSE!! A-OU! A-OU! A-OU!
