It has been a terrific start for the 2025-26 Varsity Girls Spartans Hockey Team. Beginning with a monumental win over perennial powerhouse Etobicoke Dolphins, the Spartans have run their record to 15-3-2 over the first 20 games of the season. This record is good for a second overall ranking in the MyHockey Rankings in North America for U22/U19 teams.
The team, without question, is the deepest and most talented team in recent memory. The Spartans have already scored nearly 101 goals in their first 20 games against arguably the toughest schedule of teams that they have ever had to start a season. Having dropped third-period leads against BK Selects and Eastern Townships rival Champlain College (CEGEP), the Spartans could easily be sitting at a record of 17-1-2 right now.
This success is a byproduct of our ability to attract talented players combined with our recent efforts to develop and promote from our prep team (U18/16U). With nine promoted players from last year’s JWHL championship 16U Team, it is easy to see how important our model of building from within is to our success. On our current roster, 17 of 20 or 85% of have played at least one year in our prep program.
While not officially started yet, our prep team is also off to a very good start with a record of 8-2 over their first 10 games. Beyond the record, Jadin Bingham is the first prep player in this program’s young history to earn a NCAA Division I scholarship, committing to Merrimack College in August 2025. Another prep first: Chanelle Ouellette (Team Atlantic), Éloïse Gagné, Elisabeth Bélanger and Elisabeth Papineau (Team Quebec) all made their provincial Teams for the recent Women’s U18 Nationals in Newfoundland, where Quebec earned gold and Atlantic silver. As players born in 2010, these young stars have 2 more years to participate at the provincial level.
With 10 prep and varsity players attending Nationals, we all got the chance to watch our teammates compete amongst Canada’s best while we rest up a little before a busy November. This month, the Varsity Spartans will play against top-ranked teams such as Shattuck Saint Mary’s, BK Selects and of course our JWHL rivals, NAHA and Northwood. Led by Team Quebec champions Rosalie Tremblay, Laurie Aubin, Zoé Charland, Maélie Laforges and Emilie Labonté, the team is poised and ready to take the next steps towards becoming the championship program that we aspire to be. With proven veterans like Charlie Pampalon, Pénélope Lavoie, Charlotte Labrèche and Berta Mozolai, we will continue to play at a high level on a consistent basis. Our younger players have great role models, and each week of the journey continues to get better for all of us!
